When Travel Stopped – a pandemic review

When I went to the Nostalgia party, the quotes and the idea that we live in our devices made me smile ironically. “Choose your cell” was a good joke and we thought that that was it. We live in front of our screens. It’s evolutionary. So what?

And then the pandemics came and our lives started to happen ONLY in front of a screen. Job, human interaction, shopping, even travelling (you can “visit” places online). “Offline is the new luxury” never made more sense.

We took some photos in the gallery, acknowledge the “tough” reality of the technological area we live in and we turned back to the dance floor, listening to our childhood music, leaving all those warning signs behind. It was the last party before the pandemic was declared. The next day all the events with more than 1000 people were cancelled and soon the quarantine was declared and everything closed: clubs, restaurants, malls, parks and even my neighbour’s flower shop.

The first week was the accommodation week. I’ve never seen so many exceptional memes. I laugh and laugh and laugh. I laugh until I panicked. After a week of quarantine, the perception of reality began to change. And the rollercoaster, as I saw it in my close circle, began.

After the meme phase began the reading news and checking the numbers (of infection and death cases) phase. Everyone seemed to be very productive: read, learn everything you couldn’t until now, invest, adapt your business etc. etc. etc. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! My social media was flooded with this kind of content. What was supposed to keep people away from depression, brought guilt, self-doubt, burnout.

After that, everyone (from my circle) tried to cope with the situation as they could best but many refused to read the news anymore. They started to get tired. Many worldwide influencers thought that we “just” need to learn to work from home and, as they were working already from home for years, they thought they could help newbies. We were quite wrong. Not all the advice was completely wrong but more or less incomplete. We had to learn to work during a quarantine, deprived of so many other things we were used to.

In this phase, I’ve started to watch Netflix and solve a puzzle. The determination to work was lower and lower and not just for me. Until this day (I’m writing this on May 6th) people are struggling to “resist” one more week, ten more days.

Was this the worst situation we could’ve been through? Absolutely NOT! Was this situation handled at it’s finest given the technology and knowledge we have? Probably not. But I wonder how this could have been looked like if we hadn’t had the screens we’re so harshly condemning. What if we hadn’t had this technology at all? I guess we all find the answer because it’s not the first pandemic. It would’ve been a nightmare.

Life changes anyways but the pandemic fastened the things and our lives are different now, we won’t go back to the “post-pandemic life” and it will still continue to change.

I wish that we all have patience, be gentle with ourselves and others and… be curious. This pandemic gave us the chance to reevaluate our lives.

So, how would you like your life to be from now on?

Love, Andreea
