Self-care in the Time of COVID-19

Covid-19 didn’t change only our lives but also the way we perceive reality (already). How quickly this has changed and how frightening it was at first (even without acknowledging). Each of us responded to the initial impact in our own way but, right now, everything we do affects the other one and on a LARGE scale. Although unwanted, I won’t refer to coronavirus times as bad or good. <<It’s the best time to be alive. It’s the worst time to be alive.>> or, as our friend, Charles Dickens said,  “’It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Either way, we need to learn how to work with what we have.

I don’t want to give you laborious routines for I truly believe that each of us function differently. This article is not about tips and tricks to work from home and self-isolation. It is, instead, about the little things we can do to release the anxiety and overcome the difficulties of these days. This is a great time to start listening to yourself, to your needs and observe what is happening, what is changing within you and how do you respond.

***

Kind reminder for those of you who are on psychiatric medication: please continue with the treatment and keep in touch with your doctor and therapist. It might be hard for you to keep up with the events but skipping your medication it will only work against you. Keep your support group and get to them through phone calls, face time etc. You might feel the need to totally isolate from everything and everyone but try to fight against it and learn to trust your support group and to communicate with them on a daily basis.

Minimize the time on news reading/watching (Scurtează timpul citind sau urmărind știri)

I want to address this first because I believe it’s the root of all anxiety these days. Even jokes such as memes have an info there that might trigger your fears. I, personally, started making fun of the situation, found the memes extremely good and spend the first week of coronavirus on multiple social media platforms. After just a few days I could feel my anxiety rising and it actually went up to an anxiety attack. It was indeed too much info all at once. Moderation is key and that’s not a new thing.

***

I guess you hear this a lot and it sounds quite simple too but not too many people are doing it. If until now, we could get away with not caring about our mental state, from now on this will have to change in order to have a certain quality of life.

It’s not a secret anymore that we can improve our mental state by doing certain things as breathing exercises. Our breathing differs from when we’re stress than when we’re relaxed. If you want, take the time to observe. When stressed, you’ll notice that you’re breathing short, fast and superficial. This induces tensions to your body and raise anxiety. What breathing exercises do? Well, it “fakes” the relaxation mode and send this info to the brain (it engages the parasympathetic nervous system) and the brain will then regulate the body’s functions.

Deep breathe when you feel tensioned or make some breathing exercises. There are many techniques you can find online. Just go with what you feel comfortable.

Choose your music wisely (Alege-ți muzica cu grijă)

Your favourite loud music might seem satisfying at first but it won’t calm down the anxiety. It’s more likely to make you anxious. Classic music, music for meditation or even nature sounds are great for releasing worry and tensions. Even at night, you can use nature sound just before bed. I do this from time to time and it feels good. One app I use is Tide and they have great sounds.

If you’re not used to meditate maybe this is the right time to start. These days are so rich in information that our brains and minds are bombarded and they’ll use some break from now and then. However, meditation is not (only) emptying your mind, like some think. People get discouraged when tried and still had multiple thoughts wandering through their minds.

Meditation can be even paying full attention to ones action. The most simple action as doing dishes can become a meditation if you’re paying attention to that act: how you turn on the sink, how the water sounds while is flooding the sink, how it feels (is it warm? Is it cold? How would you prefer it to be?) and so on. You might think it’s silly but it’s not. This will give your brain a well-deserved pause.

Another amazing way to meditate (and maybe my favourite one) is to follow a guided meditation. Your mind will be able to focus on one thing at a time by listening to the indications. This is really easy. You can find that even on YouTube. You’ll develop the capacity to concentrate, and, again, the brain will take a break.

***

Throughout the day, smile gently. It’s known for improving your state of mind. Just like the breathing, smiling for no reason will send a little info to the brain that “it’s fine”. It won’t make you happy-happy but it helps and, especially if you’re a pessimistic person, it’s a good exercise to switch a little bit the mindset.

Keep in mind that it’s ok not to be ok but, at the same time, there are things you can do for yourself when you’re ready.

***

Well, I could say make some sport but it doesn’t sound that fun. While staying at home we might, as well, have some fun and dancing is a great way to consume some of the energy. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with sport. On the contrary, if you make sport that’s GREAT! Keep doing that and maybe add some dancing moves to your workout. It’s an amazing activity that also improves self-expression.

***

Take care of your body (Ai grijă de corpul tău)

We tend to neglect ourselves in moments of crisis and that’s a natural response from our ancestral memory when we had to reduce our needs to the vitals. Today, let’s say it’s a good time to have this crisis. We have so many tools and resouces that we can afford to nourish ourselves. And why not? It helps to improve our mental state.

A good bath time with essential oils or foam or whatever you have on hand, a nice scrub, face masks and treatments can transform your bath into a spa. Use what you have and make the best out of it. You can make scrubs from coffee/sugar/ grounded cereals etc. with oil/water/milk/tea or whatever you prefer. Scented candels, essential oil diffuser and/or incense sticks will also transform the rest of the house into a nice home retreat.

Play around, see what it works for you, what you need and do that. If you listen closely, youțll find out that you already know what you need.

Take care of yourself and if you want to talk to someone don’t hesitate to write to me on my socials. I know that some of you might be lonely and don’t have anyone to talk to. I want to tell you that I’m here! We’re in this together and if there’s anything I can help you with, I’ll be more than happy to do so.

Love, Andreea
