I know for sure that many of you would want to do some shopping sessions during your travel. While I highly encourage conscious shopping, I can give you a tip or two on shopping (consciously) here, in Bucharest.
I, personally, don’t buy souvenirs on my trips. At least not that kind of memorabilia that will end up in a collection or something and that’s why I don’t encourage you to binge shopping either. Pay attention to your needs. I am usually shopping for art, something unique and practical (a piece of clothing, accessories etc.) or consumables (from food to body care). All these, having in mind the question “Do I really need this?”.
So, with this “disclaimer” in mind, here are my three recommendations for shopping in Bucharest.

Știu sigur că mulți dintre voi vor vrea o sesiune de shopping în excursie. În timp ce încurajez shopping-ul responsabil, pot să vă dau câteva sugestii de shopping (responsabil) aici, în București.
Personal, nu mai cumpăr suveniruri din călătorii. Cel puțin nu genul ăla care se strâng în colecții diverse și nici nu încurajez shopping-ul compulsiv. Fiți atenți la nevoile voastre. De obicei îmi place să cumpăr un obiect de artă, ceva unic și practic (o piesă vestimentară, accesorii etc.) sau consumabile (de la mâncare la produse de îngrijire). Toate astea având în minte întrebarea “Am într-adevar nevoie de asta?”.
Așadar, cu acest “disclaimer” în minte, iată cele trei recomandări de shopping în București.

If you want to purchase something original, this would be the place. It’s a traditional shop where you can find traditional clothing (Romanian blouses, contemporary clothing with traditional motifs, for men and women both), accessories and even local products (body care products, honey etc.).

Dacă vreți să vă luați ceva cu adevărat original, ăsta este locul. Este un magazin tradițional unde puteți găsi haine tradiționale (ii, haine contemporane cu motive tradiționale atât pentru bărbați cât și pentru femei), accesorii și chiar produse locale (produse de îngrijire, miere etc.).

Love Yard Sale
After being a customer, I’ve also reserved a table to find another home for my own stuff. Because we’re talking about conscious shopping, I believe reducing waste is also an idea to keep in mind.
This fair is mostly for clothes and accessories so, for all you passioned by fashion, I challenge you to try something more eco-friendly (I’ve read that fashion industry is on the second place in the top of the most polluting industries). Love Yard Sale is organized once a month so, check out their schedule and maybe you can pair it up with your trip in Bucharest.

După ce am fost client, mi-am rezervat și o masă pentru a găsi un alt cămin pentru o parte din lucrurile mele. Pentru că tot vorbim de shopping responsabil, cred că ar trebui să avem în minte și reducerea deșeurilor.
Târgul ăsta este în principal pentru haine și accesorii așa că, dacă sunteți pasionati de modă, vă provoc să încercați și variantele mai eco-friendly (am citit undeva că industria modei este pe locul doi în topul celor mai poluante industrii). Love Yard Sale este organizat cam o dată pe luna așa că verifică programul și poate reușiți să îl cuplezi cu excursia în București.

Valea cascadelor fair
Ok, I saved this for the last because I believe it’s more controversial. I thought a long time if I should recommend it to you or not but here it is. This takes place in a more industrial part of the city so it’s not actually for tourists but if you want to try something more unconventional, I guess you can come here. Keep in mind, that I took a friend with me just to be uber-safe, but that might just be only my anxiety.

Ok, am păstrat asta pentru la sfârșit pentru că este mai controversată idea. M-am gândit mult dacă să recomand asta sau nu dar iată. Târgul ăsta este organizat într-o zonă mai industrială a Bucureștiului așa că nu este chiar pentru turiști dar dacă vreți să încercați ceva mai neconvențional, cred că puteți veni aici. Luați aminte că eu am luat o prietenă cu mine, doar pentru a fi pe deplin în siguranță, dar asta este, poate, și anxietatea mea.
At this fair, you actually pay an entrance of 3 lei (lol) [leu is Romanian currency, lei plural = RON] so you can see aaaaall the stuff people have to sell. It’s a sort of thrift shop/fair thing. I wanted to come here for a project of mine and I needed some things I don’t think I could’ve found them elsewhere, and, not to mention, this cheap.
It’s a… mesmerizing chaos. You can find here from objects with almost no value (but you will still pay some lei) to objects with some value. In the end, you will give them the value. I ended up with two bar chairs (yes, I know!), a décor object for my project and some baskets. There are clothes, clock mechanisms, décor objects, flowers, broken stuff, good stuff, odd stuff. No one can actually categorize them. I found things I didn’t even know they existed (or if they should). Haha! Anyhow, it’s quite an experience if you really have the patience and time to explore more than the touristic Bucharest.

Pentru târgul ăsta se plătește o intrare de 3 lei (lol) pentru a vedea toaaaaate lucrurile pe care oamenii s-au gândit să le vândă. Este un fel de talcioc/”la ruși” (cum era în Constanța demult). Am vrut să vin aici pentru că îmi trebuiau niște lucruri pentru un proiect și nu cred că le-aș fi găsit în altă parte și atât de ieftin.
Este un haos… hiptonitaznt. Puteți găsi de la obiecte aproape fără valoare (veți plăti totuși câțiva lei) la obiecte cu ceva valoare. La sfârșit, voi le veți da valoarea. Eu am luat două scaune de bar (da, știu!), un obiect de décor pentru proiect și câteva coșuri. Sunt haine, mecanisme de ceas, obiecte de decor, flori, lucruri stricate, lucruri funcționale, lucruri ciudate. Haha! Oricum, este o reală experiența dacă într-adevar aveți răbdarea și timpul să explorați ceva mai mult decât Bucureștiul turistic.
