When I was thinking to go on a trip I always thought of the mountains, some far-away city or the seaside. But recently I’ve started to ask myself: How is life in… Ploiești for example. So I went there.
After Câmpina experience, I’ve started to be curious about other small cities. For this trip in Ploiești, though, I didn’t make any research. I just looked for a good café. My dear friend and companion for this trip, Rox, knew about some places but we decided to simply get lost on the streets and see what we can find.

Când mă gândeam la excursii, tot timpul îmi venea în minte muntele sau un oraș îndepărtat sau marea. Dar, recent, am început să mă întreb: Cum e viața în… Ploiești, de exemplu? Așa că am mers acolo.
După experiența Câmpina, am început să fiu mai curioasă să descopar orașele mici. Pentru excursia asta în Ploiești, totuși, nu am făcut nici un research. M-am uitat doar de o cafenea mișto. Buna mea prietenă și companioană în excursia asta, Rox, mai știa câteva locuri dar ne-am hotărât să ne pierdem pe străzi și să vedem ce descoperim.
The first stop was for coffee. I saw on the internet they have speciality coffee so we went there, and it was a great start for our getaway. Longline Specialty Coffee was a happy little gem and I was thrilled to have a V60. I love V60 and lately, I was kinda cheating on it with latte or some other coffees. I know, I know! Black coffee for life! I would like to write in detail every thought about this café, but I bet it will be boring for you. I’ll just say that if you visit Ploiești, this café is a must.

Prima oprire a fost pentru cafea. Am văzut pe net că aveau cafea de specialitate așa că am mers acolo și a fost un mod minunat pentru a începe această escapadă. Longline Specialty Coffee este un loc mic și vesel și am fost foarte încântată să revin la al meu V60. Iubesc V60 și în ultima vreme l-am cam trădat cu latte sau alte cafele. Știu, știu! Cafea neagră pe viață! Mi-ar plăcea să descriu în detaliu toate gândurile mele despre această cafenea dar poare ar fi mult prea plictisistor pentru voi. O să spun doar că dacă ajungeți în Ploiesti, neăparat să opriți și aici.
Next, we literally “got lost” on the streets. I’m using the quotation marks because our sense of space was amazing. Haha!
I’m trying to write this article from yesterday and I still don’t know where to begin. I guess I’ll just say that I LOVED it. I was even talking with Rox that would be nice to live here for a while. Ploiești is a quiet city and charming. I was amazed by the architecture and the retro shop windows. I guess I have a little nostalgia of old communist aesthetics. I was two years old when communism had its downfall but the aesthetics remain even today. And I find it rather charming. I honestly suffer that in Bucharest, the people felt the need to cover all in glass and commercial lightboxes. I feel that here people value more the architecture and the history. Maybe it’s not that true but that was the feeling.

Încerc să scriu articolul ăsta de ieri și încă nu știu cu ce să încep. Cred că o să spun că M-AM ÎNDRĂGOSTIT. Chiar vorbeam și cu Rox că ar fi drăguț să locuiești aici o vreme. Ploiești este un oraș liniștit și fermecător. M-a cucerit arhitectura și vitrinele retro. Cred că am o mică nostalgie pentru estetica comunistă. Aveam doi ani când a picat comunismul dar estetica a rămas până azi. Și o găsesc cumva fermecătoare. Sincer, sufar că în București s-a simțit nevoia de a masca toate astea cu sticlă și reclame luminoase. Am simțit că oamenii de aici apreciază mai mult arhitectura și istoria. Poate nu este chiar așa dar ăsta este sentimentul.
In our stroll, we found many beautiful houses. Some of them were in decay, unfortunately, but still amazing. I hope someone will do eventually do something for them.

În plimbarea noastră am găsit multe case frumoase, Unele, în ruină, din păcate, dar tot minunate. Sper că o să facă cineva ceva pentru ele într-o zi.
One of them, though, caught our attention. Was so colourful! And it was indeed a museum: “The townsfolk house” museum. And it was open. We found a traditional Romanian house from the 18th-19th century, with oriental influences. I’ve never seen anything like this before even though I visited two Village museums (The Village Museum in Bucharest and Astra Museum in Sibiu). Unfortunately, we didn’t get a guided tour (I don’t think the people working there were guides) but they were welcoming and answered some questions we had. I was amazed by the original collection of oriental objects. This house belonged to a merchant named Hagi Prodan and I guess he was impressed by the oriental lifestyle because right in front of the entrance you can see an ottoman for tea time and smoking hookah. In the other room, on the stove, it was placed a set for Turkish coffee. Even the terrace was designed so you can stay on the pillows on the floor. I can fill out a book describing every object in there but I’ll just encourage you to visit this hose for your own.

Una, totuși, ne-a atras atenția. Era foarte colorată. Și era, într-adevar, un muzeu: Muzeul Casă de târgoveț. Și era deschis. Am găsit o casă tradițională românească din secolele XVIII-XIX, cu influențe orientale. Nu am mai văzut ceva asemănător, chiar dacă am vizitat două muzee cu case tradiționale (Muzeul Satului din București și Muzeul Astra din Sibiu). Din păcate nu am avut parte de un tur ghidat (cei care lucrau acolo nu cred că erau ghizi) dar au fost amabili și ne-au răspuns la întrebări. M-a uimit colecția originală de obiecte orientale. Casa a fost a unui negustor, Hagi Prodan pe numele lui, care, îmi pare că a fost fascinat de stilul de viață oriental pentru că încă de la intrare poți vedea un colț cu un divan turcesc pentru ceai și narghilea. În altă cameră, pe soba, era așezat un set pentru a face cafea turcească la nisip. Chiar și terasa era făcută în așa fel încât să stai pe perne, pe jos. Aș putea umple o carte descriind fiecare obiect în parte dar te încurajez, în schimb, să o vizitezi personal.
The next stop was the Clock museum. Of course, we found it randomly. Rox knew about it but we were amazed that we could actually find it without searching the map. Now I realize that I have no picture with it but totally worth visiting it. The house itself is a monument from the 19th century and it looks amazing. We didn’t have a guided tour here either which was a minus but every piece had an explanation note with dates and the pieces were more or less chronologically placed. I never had a passion for clocks but this still impressed me. The oldest timepiece is from the 16th century and it’s an astronomical clock. I found a sundial from a more recent date. I would expect that a sundial would be the oldest way to measure the time. Or, maybe it is. I don’t know. I would’ve really liked to have a guide on this tour. But the pieces are unique, and I haven’t seen anything like this before, so it was totally worth it. I wonder if pocket watches will be ever again on trend. I guess that would be the time when I’ll buy a watch. Hahaha!

Următoartea oprire a fost la Muzeul Ceasului. Desigur, din întamplare am nimerit și aici. Rox știa de el dar am rămas uimite că l-am găsit fără să ne uităm pe hartă. Acum realizez că nu am nici o poza cu el dar merită vizitat. Casa însăși e un monument din secolul XIX și arată superb. Nici aici nu am avut tur ghidat și asta a reprezentat un minus dar fiecare piesă avea o plăcuță explicativă, datată și obiectele erau cumva aranjate cronologic. Nu am avut niciodată o pasiune pentru ceasuri dar colecția asta chiar m-a fascinat. Cea mai veche piesă este din secolul XVI și este un ceas astronomic. De o dată mai recentă, am văzut un disc solar. M-aș fi așteptat ca discul solar să fie cea mai veche metodă de a măsura timpul. Nu știu. Poate chiar e. Chiar ar fi fost bun un ghid pentru turul ăsta. Dar piesele sunt cumva unice și nu am mai văzut așa ceva până acum, așa că a meritat cu siguranță. Mă întreb dacă vor reveni la modă ceasurile de buzunar. Cred că atunci mi-aș lua și eu, în sfârșit, un ceas. Hahahaha!
We ended our city tour with this museum but, we found our there are more beautiful places to visit so I believe we will come back. Ploiesti charmed me and now I’m under the spell.

Am terminat turul cu Muzeul Ceasului dar am aflat și de alte locuri frumoase de vizitat așa că ne vom întoarce. Ploiești chiar m-a fermecat și sunt sub vrajă acum.
